Some studies seem to do little more than show the need for more studies, their authors falling back on such standard phrases as,†¦show more content†¦(3) Having lately read a great deal of professional literature regarding the ups and downs of teaching college composition to ESL students, I’ve noticed that students with LDs are conspicuously absent – a fact that suggests one or more possible conclusions: Students with LDs just aren’t represented in college-level ESL courses; Students with LDs are there but they don’t have needs separate from those of non LD students that would require special consideration by college teachers; These students are there and have needs requiring special attention by their teachers, but the teachers themselves lack understanding of what those needs are and how to accommodate them. Which of these holds most true, in general, is what I’ve set out to discover, in hopes that I will find a hidden font of knowledge addressing the singular needs of ESL students with LDs and how teachers do, or can, meet those needs. Biography of Andrea Yates, Murderer of Her Five Children Andrea Yates (born Andrea Kennedy; July 2, 1964) was suffering from extreme postpartum depression when she drowned her five children in a bathtub in 2001. They eventually moved in together and spent much of their time in religious study and prayer. At their marriage on April 17, 1993, they told their guests that they planned on having as many children as nature provided. In their eight years of marriage, the Yateses had four boys and one girl. Andrea stopped jogging and swimming when she became pregnant with her second child. Friends said she had become reclusive. Her isolation appeared to increase after they decided to homeschool their five children: Noah, John, Paul, Luke, and Mary. Rusty took a job in Florida in 1996, and the family moved into a 38-foot travel trailer in Seminole, Florida. In 1997 they returned to Houston and lived in their trailer because Rusty wanted to live light. The next year, Rusty purchased a 350-square-foot renovated bus as their permanent home. At this point, they had four children, and living conditions were cramped. Michael Woroniecki Rusty purchased their bus from Michael Woroniecki, a traveling minister whose religious views influenced Rusty and Andrea. Rusty agreed with only some of Woronieckis ideas, but Andrea embraced even the most extreme. He preached that a womans role was derived from the sin of Eve and that bad mothers who are bound for hell create bad children who also go to hell. Andrea was so totally captivated by Woroniecki that Rustys and Andreas families were concerned. Suicide Attempts On June 16, 1999, Andrea called Rusty and begged him to come home. He found her shaking involuntarily and chewing on her fingers. The next day, she was hospitalized after she tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of pills. She was transferred to the Methodist Hospital psychiatric unit and diagnosed with a major depressive disorder. The medical staff described Andrea as evasive in discussing her problems. On June 24 she was prescribed an antidepressant and released. Once home, Andrea didnt take the medication. She began to self-mutilate and refused to feed her children because she felt they were eating too much. She thought there were video cameras in the ceilings and said that the characters on television were talking to her and the children. She told Rusty about the hallucinations, yet neither of them informed Andreas psychiatrist, Dr. Eileen Starbranch, who later told the court at Yates first trial that she ranked her â€Å"among the five sickest patients she had ever seen. On July 20, Andrea put a knife to her neck and begged her husband to let her die. Risks of More Babies Andrea was again hospitalized and stayed in a catatonic state for 10 days. After being treated with injections of drugs that included Haldol, an antipsychotic, her condition improved. Rusty was optimistic about drug therapy because Andrea appeared more like she was when they met. Starbranch warned the Yateses that having another baby might bring on more psychotic behavior. Andrea was placed on outpatient care and prescribed Haldol. Andreas family urged Rusty to buy a home instead of returning Andrea to the cramped space of the bus. He purchased a nice home in a peaceful neighborhood. Once in her new home, Andreas condition improved to the point that she returned to past activities such as swimming, cooking, and some socializing. She also interacted well with her children. She expressed to Rusty that she had strong hopes for the future but still viewed her life on the bus as her failure. Mental Illness Continues In March 2000, Andrea, at Rustys urging, became pregnant and stopped taking the Haldol. On Nov. 30, 2000, Mary was born. Andrea was coping but on March 12 her father died, and her mental state regressed. She stopped talking, refused liquids, mutilated herself, and would not feed Mary. She also frantically read the Bible. At the end of March, Andrea was admitted to a different hospital. Her new psychiatrist treated her briefly with Haldol but discontinued it, saying that she did not seem psychotic. Andrea was released only to return again in May. She was released again after 10 days and in her last follow-up visit, her psychiatrist told her to think positive thoughts and to see a psychologist. Tragedy On June 20, 2001, Rusty left for work and before his mother arrived to help, Andrea began to put into action the thoughts that had consumed her for two years. She filled the tub with water and, beginning with Paul, systematically drowned the three youngest boys, then placed them on her bed and covered them. Mary was left floating in the tub. The last child alive, her firstborn, 7-year-old son Noah, asked his mother what was wrong with Mary, then turned and ran away. Andrea caught him and as he screamed, she dragged him and forced him into the tub next to Marys floating body. He fought desperately, coming up for air twice, but Andrea held him down until he was dead. Leaving Noah in the tub, she brought Mary to the bed and laid her in the arms of her brothers. Conviction During Andreas confession, she explained her actions by saying that she wasnt a good mother, the children were not developing correctly, and she needed to be punished. Her controversial 2002 trial lasted three weeks. The jury found Andrea guilty of capital murder, but rather than recommending the death penalty, they voted for life in prison. Andrea would have been eligible for parole in 2041, at the age of 77. Retrial Ordered In January 2005 a Houston appeals court granted Yates a new trial, ruling that a prosecution experts false testimony about the television program Law Order required a retrial. The expert, Dr. Park Dietz, a psychiatrist, had testified that Yates was psychotic at the time of the murders but knew right from wrong, meaning she wasnt insane under Texas definition of legal insanity.   On cross-examination, Dietz, a consultant on Law Order, a program Yates was known to watch, said the show had aired an episode regarding a woman with postpartum depression who drowned her children in the bathtub and was found insane, and it was aired shortly before the crime occurred, according to The New York Times. There was no such episode, a falsehood discovered after the jury convicted Yates. After learning about the false testimony during the sentencing hearing, the jury had rejected the death penalty and sentenced Yates to life in prison. On July 26, 2006, at the second trial, a Houston jury of six men and six women found Yates not guilty of murder by reason of insanity. She was sent to Kerrville State Hospital in Kerrville, Texas, for an indefinite stay and has consistently waived a review of her status, the only way she could be released.   Legacy The case ignited a national debate about mental illness, postpartum depression, and the legal definition of insanity in Texas. The Safety of Blood A five-year old girl is riding down the street, on her way to her best friend's house. She doesn't have a care in the world and is quietly humming to herself. Suddenly a car whips around the corner and swerves to avoid the child, but he looses control and squarely hits the girl, causing the her to fall and get trapped between the car and her battered bicycle. A main artery in her leg has been severed and blood fills the gutter of the street. As she gets rushed to the hospital in the ambulance, a pint of blood is given to her to attempt to replace some of the life giving fluid that is pouring out of her leg. In the end she received four pints of blood and made a full recovery. Although everything turned out all right for the girl, things could have been much different. What if that blood hadn't been there because the nation's blood supply was low? What if the blood that she received had been infected with a deadly disease such as Syphilis or HIV? These are pressing concerns for today's society. Even though one in every five people will need a blood transfusion and the risk of contracting a disease such as AIDS is practically negligible, people are still concerned that the blood that they receive may have harmful or deadly diseases and that today's blood supply is not "safe." However, "safe" means different things for different people. For some, safe is an absolute security from any danger. This is an extreme viewpoint, though, because most people realize that one can never be completely safe. Another, and more popularly held connotation of "safe," is the probability of not getting hurt. This is a much more reasonable and plausible definition and therefor will be used throughout this paper. However, even though the overwhelming probability is that nothing will go wrong, people still fear that the nation's blood supply is unsafe. They are incorrect in this belief, though, because much is done to assure that the nation's blood supply is, in fact, safe. One requirement to having a safe blood supply is to have an extensive reserve, because this allows for the option of discarding any blood that is potentially unsafe. The assurance of an ample blood supply begins with the donation process. Most of the people in this country have the capability to donate blood. Bad Side of Sports Essay

Trophies, gold medals, and awards are some of the reason you might play a sport. But there is something else that you can also get in trying to achieve your goal. All the work you put in for a particular sport can set you up for success and also can set up for failure. Also, it can leave you with something that you will remember for the rest of your life. In a lot of the things that you do like practice, exercising athletics need to also protect themselves. While playing sports some of the things that you do not think of are injuries, diseases, and medicine. Image, you are just at practice, not a big game, but you are get ready for the next game. Then next thing you notice is that you hear something break and it is your leg. You start to feel all kinds of emotions; it hurts, you have to go to the doctor, and you will not be able to play any more sports for a while. Also think about if you were playing basketball and you were in the middle of the game and you tripped over your own two feet and you sprained you ankle. Or think about if you were a wrestler or something and all you think about is your body weight. This can cause you to become anorexic, which is an eating disorder and now you have a body disorder. Also think about if you were a boxer and you were to get hit in head (you would probably get hit unconscious) or if you got hit in the kidney ( you would suffer a lot of pain. Every once in a while you can get hurt playing a sport and you might even get cut. But can this effect any other participant playing the sport? There are many diseases that can spread through blood, not to mention disease that can spread through sweat. All the time you are practicing with a person whose has ringworm, staphylococcus, or what if the person you are practicing with has HIV/AID. What are the chances of getting one of those diseases? Well, wrestling is a common sport and this sport you are wrestling with a person with full contact and you are less likely to be prevented from any diseases. If a person had a ringworm for insists you are easily in contact with the person and you become in contact with this contagious disease. Times are change and they are now coming up with more ways to prevent getting broken bones, getting diseases, and helping those who are already injured. For most broken pains you will go through rehabilitation and also get some pain relievers. For the diseases (most but not all) there are some pills that can kill most of the diseases inside the body. One of the most important things that you are going to need is time. It will take a lot of time for your body to heal, and by you going out on a hurt body you are just endangering your even more. While playing sports some of the things that you do not think of are injuries, diseases, and medicine. So the next time you think about playing a sport think about whether you want a gold medal or a broke leg. But if it happens you are to get a broken leg the doctors can help you and take some of the pain away but you will still remember it for life. That’s just the bad side of sports.

The reason inventories is not taken into account in this calculation is because it is not as liquid as the other assets. Inventories comes in many form such as raw material, work in progress and finished goods which is difficult to be valued unless it is sold. Genting Berhad need not to worry about when its liabilities is due as it can be settled at any given time. 3.2 Asset Management Ratio Asset management ratio is use to analyse how effectively is the company using its asset to generate revenue (Peavler R. 2013). There are a total of four ways to calculate this ratio but only two will be discussed. 3.2.1 Inventory Turnover This measures how quickly the company sells its goods and clears the inventories from its shelves. It also shows how well the company is in managing their inventories. The higher ratio indicates how quickly is the inventories sold (Lane M.A.). For example, in 2010, the inventory turnover is 18.8117 times. The increase in the rate shows that there is a shorter time where inventory stayedsayeiz idle in 2011. It also means that Genting Berhad had done more sales and gain more revenue. 3.2.2 Asset Turnover Asset turnover shows how efficiently the company is using its asset to make sales. Examples are the use of equipment, premises and others. Since the ratio in 2011 is higher than 2010, it can be said that Genting Berhad had better management of its asset during that year. However, the ratio of both years is considered to be low. It is possible that Genting Berhad is more dependent on the use of its capital (cash) rather than assets to generate revenue. 3.3 Financial Leverage Financial Leverage is also known as the debt management ratio. As its name implies, it evaluates how well the company is managing its debts. There are times where a company acquire debts to purchase assets instead of the using the businesss capital (stockholders equity). 3.3.1 Debt (liabilities) to Total Assets Debt to total asset ratio measure the amount of assets that are financed by debts taken by the company (Peavler R). The decrease in ratio shows that Genting Berhad is no longer depending on debts to purchase or finance its asset. Although some might argue that the decrease in ratio is due to the settlement of loans by Genting Berhad while the amount of its assets remains the same. However, as it is shown, both the asset and the liabilities had increase. It proves that the company is still acquiring assets but has taken up lesser loans or settled some of it. 3.3.2 Debt to Stockholders Equity This ratio is used to measure how much debt compare to capital is used to finance the assets in the company (Ycharts). The higher the ratio, the more debts the company has taken to finance its assets. Though sometimes, having liabilities is a better option than using capital. Without liabilities, a company can run its business without worrying about the amount they need to settle the debts. But using too much capital will show a negative cash flow on the statements which will draw away investors. Having a balance debt management ratio is important. 3.4 Profitability Ratio Profitability ratio is used to measure the profit earnings by the company. It indicates the ability of the company to make earning relation to asset, sales and equity (Nelson S.L. 2011). It is the most important ratio as people from the public are mainly interested in the profits earned by the company. There are total four types of calculation but only two will be shown. 3.4.1 Gross Profit Rate The Gross profit rate shows how much is left after covering all the expenses such as administrative, sales and distribution. This indicates the amount of sales used to cover the expenses. In this case, in year 2011, Genting Berhad uses about 40% of their sales available to cover the production costs. The decrease in value could also mean that Genting Berhad is spending more in their production costs. 3.4.2 Return on Sales Return on sales, also known as operating profit margin. It shows how much the company makes after paying for variable costs such as wages and raw materials excluding taxes. Variable costs are expenses that changes in proportion to the activities of the business (ReadyRatios). It shows how much profit is earned per RM of sales. The increase in 2011 indicates that Genting Berhad is becoming more efficient as the company is getting better at handling their variable costs. 4.0 Five other measurements Rather than using the ratio analysis, there are other ways to measure a companys financial standings and performances. One of them is Free Cash Flow (FCF). Free cash flow can be defined as the cash available after subtracting the amount the company had used for its business (N.A 2010). Unlike profits, the FCF is the actual amount that the company has in hand or at the bank. FCF is used to make investments, expanding the business and paying the shareholders. Besides that, there is the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). It is used to measure the expected return rate from buying the companys shares (McCraken M. n.d). This calculation is done by the investors. When performing investments, investors are expected to take certain amount of risks. They would want to evaluate the value of the risk and how much should be expected to be return to them for taking such a risk. The higher the risk, the higher the expected return value. If the investors feel that the company could not provide the expected return rate, they might choose to invest in something else. The third is Market Value Added (MVA). MVA can be defined as the difference between the market value of the firms stock and the capital invested by shareholders (Jermanis D. 2006). This can be seen as the amount the shareholders earn or get back if they were to sell their shares. The MVA shows how well the company is managing its scarce resources. The more efficient they are, the more MVA they have. It can only be used for publicly listed share prices as it is not easy to determine the value otherwise. The fourth is Economic Value Added (EVA). Unlike MVA, EVA is used to measure a companys performance during a certain period of time. It is usually used by internal management. EVA can be calculated by subtracting capital invested times weighted average cost of capital from net operating profit after tax (EVA = Net Operating Profit After Tax (Capital Invested x WACC)). The calculations for EVA will tell if the profit earned in a project is enough to cover the capital invested in it. A negative EVA number shows loss (Investing Answers n.d.). A companys performance can also be evaluated through customers perspective. If the company is doing well and treating their customers right, their customers will recommend the company to others. High profits only show the sales the company made. It does not mean that it has good customer retention plan. Without a good retention plan, the company will eventually lose all its customers to other companies. The company must also be able to deliver the promised level of satisfaction and handle the customers complaint efficiently. 5.0 Recommendation I would buy and recommend Genting Berhads shares. The overall ratio analysis shows a positive outlook of the company. By comparing the two most recent financial statements which is 2010 and 2011, it can be seen that the company is improving through its assets acquisition and sales. The most important thing is the profitability ratio. It shows that the company is getting better at managing its cost which will lead to an increase of profit margin for the company. If the company is expanding and developing consistently, we as shareholders will be able to get more dividends in return. Moreover, there are news that Genting Berhad is expanding to other nations such as Bahamas which will provide the company with an international recognition.
